Warnings for customers of Virgin Media

Virgin Media data breach risks

It is important for us to issue warnings for customers of the Virgin Media data breach, as they could be at risk of harm and fraud following their details being exposed.

It has already been reported that a number of members of the public have been targeted by scammers, and it may be that criminals are using information from the data breach to assist them. Whilst we cannot know for sure, it is important for people to be vigilant, and warnings for customers who could be at risk of being targeted are important to issue.

There have been recent reports of people receiving numerous calls from people claiming to be calling from Virgin Media themselves and asking for sensitive information.

The Virgin Media Data Breach

The Virgin Media data breach came to light in March 2020 when it was revealed that around 900,000 people, mostly customers, had been subject to a data leak. Personal data had been left accessible to the general public online, and the breach occurred between April 2019 and 28th February 2020, leaving information exposed for over 10 months.

The data breach exposed names, email addresses, telephone numbers and, in some cases, contract information, with the total number of victims around 900,000. Following further investigations, it has been reported that the information was accessed by an unknown third-party during the 10 month breach period at least once.

This means the victims’ sensitive data was likely seen and could be used in crime that includes cyber-attacks or phishing scams. As such, warnings for customers are necessary as there could be other attempts to steal personal information or data, or commit acts of fraud or identity theft.

Take heed of warnings for customers over scams

A number of people have reportedly been targeted by phishing scams, including incidents of consistent cold callers making multiple attempts a day, according to recent news reports. Some have said that the callers claim to be from Virgin Media and are contacting them due to an issue with their internet and asking for account information and bank details.

This could lead to people falling for scams that could result in thousands of pounds being lost or stolen. People have been sharing stories of incidents online as warnings for customers to be vigilant that they could be targeted.

Virgin Media’s website warns of further scams, saying:

‘These calls may be a type of scam called Vishing – where a caller will try to trick someone into providing financial and private information or access to a computer system, for potential identity theft.’

Again, we do not know if there are any links between attempts to scam people and the data breach that we are representing people for. But criminals have previously used data exposed from breaches to commit such crimes, so it is vital that clear warnings for customers are issued and understood.
