Because we are confident that we can succeed with the legal action that we have launched, we are able to work for our clients on the basis that we can waive our legal fees if the claim doesn’t succeed, subject to the terms and conditions in place (which we have to point out!)

Data protection laws breached

The Virgin Media data breach stemmed from information being exposed for a prolonged period of time between April 2019 and February 2020. It happened due to a database that was reportedly used for marketing being left exposed, and this arose from the incorrect configuration of the database in question.

On the face value of things, this was an error; a mistake that led to the exposure of personal details for some 900,000 people. Be that as it may, an error can still amount to a breach of important data protection laws that exist to protect us. At the end of the day, systems and protocols ought to have prevented this massive data leak from happening in the first place. Further, the fact that the exposure lasted for almost 10 months, and was only identified by a third-party security researcher and not by Virgin Media itself, is evidence of further failure.

What this all means is that the victims of this serious breach have been severely let down. We, as leading data breach compensation lawyers, aim to fight for the rights of those who have been wronged.

What could victims claim for?

When data protection laws are breached, victims can be entitled – by law – to claim compensation. You could be eligible to receive damages for the distress caused by the loss of control of your personal information. You could also be eligible to claim for any losses and expenses.

Please note that you do not have to have lost any money to be able to make a claim now. You can be entitled to compensation for the distress caused by the breach alone, and most people will likely fall into this category of claimant.
