The Virgin Media data breach occurred between April 2019 and 28th February 2020, and it resulted in 900,000 people’s personal information being made available online for over 10 months. The breach is said to have stemmed from an ‘incorrectly configured’ database as a result of employee error, and this error allowed the database to be accessible online to anyone.
The data breach was identified by independent security researcher TurgenSec who then alerted Virgin Media about the breach. Further investigation into the Virgin Media data breach revealed that an unknown third-party had accessed the database at least once during the 10 months it was accessible online. This means that personal data could now be in the hands of criminals, leaving victims vulnerable to cybercrime and as a target for unwanted scams and fraud.

The Virgin Media data breach involved personal data, including names, email addresses, telephone numbers and, in some cases, contract information. This data is all sensitive and should not be shared outside of the company you have entrusted to keep it safe. Whilst there is currently no evidence to suggest that this information has been used inappropriately or is in the hands of criminals, you could still make a claim.
Important data protection laws can entitle you to make a compensation claim for the loss of control of your personal information. If it is found that your personal information has been further exposed and/or misused, you may also be entitled to factor this into a claim as well.
