The Virgin Media data breach occurred between April 2019 and 28th February 2020, where over 900,000 people had their personal details exposed online for the 10-month period. The breach stemmed from an ‘incorrectly configured’ database as a result of employee error, which left the database accessible to the public online.
The personal data exposed in the breach included names, email addresses, telephone numbers and, for some, contract information that involved details that linked victims to explicit and pornographic websites.
Further investigation found that the database that contained over 900,000 victims’ personal information had been accessed by an unknown third-party at least once during the 10-month breach period. The risks for victims could be substantial as a result of this.
The data exposed in this data breach could leave victims vulnerable to phishing email scams, cold call fraud attempts and, in the cases of explicit details being leaked, victims could be targeted by criminals for blackmail and ransom attacks.
If you have had your data exposed in this breach, it is incredibly important that you take action and make a data loss compensation claim with us. Virgin Media need to be held to account for a serious data breach of this size and we are here to help do just that. At the same time, you can access some form of justice as a victim too.
