Payment card fraud from a data breach

payment card fraud

The risks of payment card fraud and theft from a data breach can be significant, even where actual payment card information has not been exposed in a privacy event.

This is why we always say that, even when personal contact details are affected, people can still be at risk of being targeted. This can also be why people can suffer significant distress when such information is misused or exposed.

If you are one of the 900,000 people affected by the Virgin Media data leak, and if you have not yet started your claim, find out if you are still in time to do so by completing a few forms on our website here now.

Risks of payment card fraud from a data breach

There can be considerable risks of payment card fraud that can arise from a data breach, even where details of an actual payment card have not been exposed.

Whilst payment card fraud can obviously happen where bank details or payment card information has been exposed in a hack, and this does happen, there are other ways it can also take place. Hackers only need your contact information to pass the details on to criminals who may then try to contact you and direct you to fake copycat websites. You may then end up inputting your payment card information into a copycat website, or it may even be a case that you download a virus file from an email attachment that looks legitimate.

This is why we always say that it only takes a little bit of information for criminals to try to target people for payment card fraud and theft. As such, any breach of private information can cause significant distress to those affected, and can lead to risks of people being targeted.

How this could link to the Virgin Media data leak

Payment card information was not affected directly in the Virgin Media data leak incident that we are representing thousands of people for in our group action for compensation. That being said, personal contact information was involved, which means that, as we have said above, scammers could try to contact people to dupe them into handing over more information or directing people to fraudulent websites. If they can do this, they may be able to get hold of payment card information and steal money directly from people’s accounts, or make purchases in their name online.

This is why we often say that it is no use when companies play down a breach by saying that no financial information was affected. Whilst on the face of it this appears to be good, and it can be positive in some ways, this does not mean that there are no risks at all that people could fall victim to fraud and theft. The risks that remain are still important factors to consider.
